Summer to fall

There's a lot going on in this look and I love it all. Real ingenuity in pairing a green lace dress with a zebra jacket. The shoes are a nice touch (whoa they're high). What I really love about the 'Italian look' is the hair - I mean it's awful - it looks either dirty or wet, it's in a scrawny ponytail and is quite severe. That said, it's totally chic. Doesn't that just drive you crazy? And just when I'd all but given up on Mr. Sartorialist. His subject matter has become less diverse over time, which means far fewer women above the age of say, 20. And fewer men and certainly fewer men in l'age and beyond which I always found far more interesting than another slate of sweet young things, and a close second to women in l'age. Now it seems to be all about extremes of fashion and, frankly, teenage fashion, which has little interest for me. If I want to look at pretty teenagers I can read American Vogue and its ilk. But this look is inspiring and a rather nice transition from summer to fall.

  1. Yes, this kind of natural beauty and simple chic is nothing to scoff at; amusing to think what my photos would look like if I pulled my curls pack in a stern pony. Not instantly chic, that's for sure. Still, there are elements of this look I do try to incorporate -- single colour dress with contrasting cardi/jacket and accent shoes (mine wouldn't have a heel that high, obv.)
Somehow when Sart switched over to his new website, my RSS feed lost him, and I haven't missed the photos enough to set that up again. Still admire his work when I pop in occasionally, but not enough relevant to me, really.

  3. btw, Wendy B is looking for photos of readers/bloggers wearing houndstooth -- you've got some great ones from last year -- there's one right now on your "You might also like" gadget linking to "Green shoes with this outfit?"

  4. On the subject of street style bloggers, yes, its a shame that the Sartorialist seems to be narrowing his range. His photos of stylish older people seem to be shot mainly in Italy- hmmm. But where is the blog for us ? I love the photos on Advanced style, but I don't want that eccentric, colourful look. Will someone get out there with a camera. I suspect, though, that a more discreet elegance goes with the sort of person who chooses not to be photographed.

  5. Mater: I'm the same. Pop in occasionally but not the way I used to. It's like looking at a teen magazine. I'll see if I've missed the opportunity on Wendy B. I'd forgotten I had any houndstooth!

Parthenope: Good point on discreet elegance going hand in hand with a reluctant subject. And me too, I wish there was someone taking great photos of women who are neither eccentric nor in the first bloom of youth. There's a huge opportunity - wish I could take a photo to save my life.

  6. Scott Schuman's blog was a variety of interesting people and I browsed it each and every day. Not anymore. People especially dress up to get shooted by Schuman.
Advanced Style is funny, but I'm not a big fan of excited self-staging à la Anais Nin.

  7. Barbara: I so agree. The variety is gone and it is editorialized. And I agree with you and Parthenope about the almost nutty look that seems to have overtaken Advanced Style. Cute but not compelling. Where are the real women of l'age?

  8. I love this look, very pulled together and chic. Those heels and that jacket really make this look pop. Just lovely! And yes, that look would be great on a women over a certain age!
